Severe Maternal Hypertension
Untreated severe hypertension is a major contributor to maternal morbidity and mortality. In response to feedback from healthcare clinicians and statewide data, PQC4ME was awarded CDC funding in 2022 as part of a five-year grant to improve the treatment of severe hypertension among pregnant and postpartum women through the AIM Severe Hypertension in Pregnancy Bundle.
Hospital teams set a SMART goal: “85% of patients with acute onset severe hypertension will receive antihypertensive medication within one hour over two consecutive quarters.” The average rate of timely treatment improved from 44% in 2022 to 58% in 2024 across participating hospitals, with a 95% engagement rate in the AIM Bundle. Cohort 1 included 9 hospitals, Cohort 2 added 12 more, and Cohort 3 engaged 2 additional hospitals, totaling 20 of 21 participating hospitals. Unfortunately, Maine lost 3 OB units: 1 in 2022 and 2 more in 2023.
Teams submitted quarterly data, participated in learning community sessions, and shared best practices. As PQC4ME shifts focus to statewide support for perinatal mental health conditions, it will offer limited continued support for hospitals transitioning the AIM Bundle into a “Sustainability Phase,” ensuring the maintenance and continuous improvement of processes and outcomes achieved.
Welcome to the ‘Know the Signs’ provider video. This resource is designed to equip healthcare professionals with the knowledge and tools to recognize key indicators and post-birth warning signs. By understanding these signs, providers can offer timely support and ensure better outcomes for patients. Let’s explore how we can work together to empower and inform those in our care.
