Building Maine’s Perinatal System of Care: A Roadmap for the Future is a project to inventory and organize the growing portfolio of perinatal-related initiatives in the public and private sectors into a “Perinatal System of Care Roadmap.”

Goals of the Roadmap are to:

1) Increase awareness and understanding of new and expanded initiatives

2) Depict relationships, alignment and synergy among the initiatives

3) Reveal gaps for future opportunities. The overall goal of the Roadmap is to increase collaboration, communication, efficient use of resources and ultimately, to strengthen Maine’s Perinatal System of Care.

The interactive roadmap is intended to show the milestones of the perinatal journey from preconception & well-person care through the baby’s first birthday.

Baby's First Birthday

- Access: Assure affordability of health insurance

- Workforce: Assure the availability of Primary Care Providers

- Data, Surveillance, and Evaluation: Standardize screening and referral processes

- Quality Improvement: Reduce barriers to screening programs

Pregnancy

Pregnancy is a remarkable and transformative stage of life during which a woman's body nurtures and develops a new human being. There are three stages of this development.

- Access: Assure availability of prenatal care

- Workforce: Assure availability of obstetric care providers

- Data Surveillance and Evaluation: Reduce maternal and infant morbidity and mortality

- Quality Improvement: Implement Q1 projects based on MFIMR findings

- Text4Baby: Receive free text messages three times per week, timed to your due date or your baby's birth date, through pregnancy and up until the baby's first birthday

- Compass by March of Dimes: An app that "supports parents and caregivers on their journey from pregnancy through postpartum by providing answers, resources, and compassion at every step."

Labor & Delivery

Labor refers to the physical activities involved with giving birth which include dilation of the cervix and contraction of the uterus. The period of labor varies but leads to the delivery of the baby.

- Access: Assure availability of birth services

- Workforce: Assure availability of obstetric/newborn providers

- Data, Surveillance and Evaluation: Assess access to appropriate level of care

- Quality Improvement: Implement AI bundles and newborn QI projects

Postpartum Care

Postpartum care refers to the essential steps taken to support a new birthing persons’ physical and emotional well-care after childbirth. Typically, this is a six-to-eight-week period, at which point the birthing person’s body has nearly returned to its pre-pregnant state.

- Access: Assure availability of postpartum and newborn care

- Workforce: Assure availability of obstetric and newborn providers

- Data, Surveillance and Evaluation: Assess utilization of postpartum care under MaineCare

- Quality Improvement: Sustain QI-Infant Safe Sleep, Eat, Sleep, Console, Period of PURPLE Crying

Reproductive & Well-Person Care

Encompasses complete physical, mental, and social well-being related to the reproductive system. It involves taking steps now to protect the health of a potential future baby.
